Over The Air Updates
« on: December 12, 2016, 08:27:27 pm »
Please forgive my ignorance as I try to better grasp the concepts surounding IOT, Gateways, etc  Specifically, I am trying to better understand (1) "Over the air update" capabilities of mcThings and (2) Deploying many multiple mcModules for a particular project.

(1) If i have say 100 devices installed in a factory, is it possible for me to push code changes from a remote location to all of these devices?  How is this done (high level explanation is good.... not down to code level)  Will or is this possible through the McStudio interface?

(2) Say again 100 devices were to be used for a particular project, are there "bulk" programming methods that would allow one to program all devices without having to hard code unique IDs into them?  How is device tracking or allocation usually handled on a larger scale?

Perhaps someone from mcThing can share where the platform is heading in this regard.  Like I mentioned, I am only trying to gain a better grasp of these types of concepts for now.  Any further reading on the topic one can point me too would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

Hi Charliemaker,
Good question! We are working on implementing a cloud service (mcCloud) that will introduce the capabilities for all functions you mention. This is in progress right now and we will be pushing information out about the service soon.

It will allow you to do many things like bulk OTA firmware and programming to multiple modules among many other things!
There is some discussion within the forum on some of the capabilities of what we are planning on implementing. As you can understand, this is a serious undertaking with many factors and variables to consider and quite a bit of work to implement properly.

Here are a couple of threads in the forum where the mcCloud is mentioned. Again, more details to follow:
