mc-Gateway / Re: How I broke OTA update
« on: September 03, 2016, 03:17:47 pm »
Is it possible that clicking "Erase mcScript" during one connection with my mcGateway could have caused the mcGateway to not connect with mc-OTA in my next attempts?

mc-Gateway / Wi-Fi Network Priority List
« on: August 25, 2016, 01:49:39 pm »
The mc-Things team has already done a good job improving Wi-Fi and MQTT support by lengthening possible usernames and passwords, and adding ClientIDs.

Another idea is to have a priority list of known network names and passwords, very similar to how macOS manages preferred networks. Imagine being able to prepare for a network change in advance by having a few passwords to try on the mc-Gateway. Or, what if a mc-Gateway is mobile and jumps around different networks?

mc-Module / Re: TempSensor Library I2C Invalid Speed mc-Module120
« on: August 24, 2016, 02:18:48 pm »
I may have solved the problem. I looked on GitHub and the input to the I2C method is different than what I had. However, I still have not yet gotten temperature readings over MQTT.

The current version of mc-Studio has the same code as on GitHub. My project was just using a legacy library.

mc-Module / TempSensor Library I2C Invalid Speed mc-Module120
« on: August 24, 2016, 02:13:11 pm »
I am using the built-in TempSensor library and I got the attached error.

I don't like the idea of soldering anything during development.

If the headers provided with the mc-Dev board are the standard 0.1" (which is too small), then what size will fit tightly on the mc-Module 120?

I just got my mc-Dev board today. The mc-Module 110's work great due to their pins having a zig-zag pattern. However, I am struggling to get the mc-Module 120's to sit on the headers that came with the mc-Dev board.

Advice?

Very interesting. The insider-like knowledge is nice :)

mc-Platform General / Re: Remote mc-Product Maintenance
« on: August 23, 2016, 03:08:22 pm »
While I would be very excited about those updates from a development perspective, I want to emphasize the idea that mc-Things are not always going to be in the same building as a developer. If we ever want to package and sell a mc-Things solution to customers, we need a way to remotely access the mc-Things and keep support people out of the equation. The deployed bundle should "just work" to the appearance of our customers.

I experienced exactly the same behavior to kristofferis's point #1. Connecting to devices in mc-Studio is very difficult and rarely successful. Waiting more than 4 minutes, power cycling, disconnecting the mc-Gateway and reconnecting, and opening/closing mc-Studio all do not work except for 1 lucky case.

mc-Module / Re: Size Footprint Question
« on: August 23, 2016, 10:41:36 am »
If only I had read the product page, I would have known this.  :-[ Things blend together since I have been following the project from the start. That picture hasn't always been there, but I like how we now know exactly where the sensors are on the circuit board.

To make more use of a stupid question, does this mean antenna/range boosters of some kind are possible? Would they be effective? How many models and tests did you run to decide the on the optimal antenna?

It seems the WPS standard doesn't work with hidden SSIDs. The mc-Things solution works fine.

mc-Module / Size Footprint Question
« on: August 23, 2016, 09:26:31 am »
Is the red bracketed part in my attached picture of the mc-Module there for a critical reason? It looks like there is some kind of big copper wire there, and it also contains the mc-module branding. On the back is some information about the pins, but that can always be found online. Is the copper used at the factory for lower-than-firmware bootstrapping?

My point is that that part of the mc-Module takes up 1/4 or 1/3 of the width, and I would think a smaller physical size would be more important than a bit of branding. The branding could potentially be moved to the back.

mc-Platform General / Overall Security Review
« on: August 23, 2016, 09:07:58 am »
How is mc-Things protecting our data in these areas? I am trying to focus on software security issues. If anyone nefarious gains physical access to the hardware, security goes out the window.

  • LPLAN messages passing from mc-Modules to the mc-Gateway (and vice versa)
  • mc-Gateway security if the LAN gets compromised
  • MQTT and IFTTT messages from mc-Gateway over the open internet

Even though a cursory review may think sensor data is innocuous, there are plenty of conceivable ways on how to gain information about lifestyles by learning patterns based on IoT products. We want to know how our data is encrypted.

If anyone sees more areas of software-centric and wireless security issues, please let me know or add them to the discussion.
