I think you will be happy to hear that we are actually working on a very comprehensive cloud deployment solution (mcCloud) that encompasses all the suggestions here and goes a lot further still.

We will have more information soon.

The purpose of the gateway and dongle is very specific. We will not be publishing schematics for these devices because normal use does not require require this information.

We do the majority of our design work with Altium Designer.

Pages 6 and 7 of the module product spec should give all the info you need to create footprints.
We will have a look at what we can do to make designing for the modules easier.

Helge,

You're absolutely right that at least the hardware needs to be open in order for it to be useful. In my last message this completely slipped my mind. I will be posting the schematic for the mc-Mod110, mc-Mod120 and mc-Dev on the forum today and we will be putting it on the website next week.

Apologies for the bad communications.

On another note we just released a new OTA updater that should be able to recover your device.

As always, let us know if you have any further questions or comments.

Regards,

-Tom-

Hi Helge,

Apologies for the tardy reply.

Unfortunately during and after the Kickstarter campaign we were faced with some tough choices. We had hoped to keep things completely open but unfortunately there were some choices that conflicted with keeping things open.

1. Security. In order to provide very robust enterprise level security we could not open up significant parts of the firmware. These security methods and implementations are still being worked on and should be rolled out Q4 of this year. Some of the security provisions are already on all modules delivered so it will be a seamless changeover

2. Investment. In order to make the project last, be something with continued support, and honestly be something good we needed outside investment. Investors are simply very hesitant to put down any kind of money without IP being protected. For this reason, along with security and a few other thing, we had to keep the source closed. It was either letting delivering something that was not very good and letting it die or closing the sources and getting investment to keep going.

3. More powerful mc-Script. mc-Script has become significantly more powerful than initially planned. The vast majority of applications written directly to the hardware can also be written in mc-Script. This makes open sourcing the firmware less beneficial.

We did not take any of these choices lightly and we believe that doing this was in the best interest of our backers. We are still making our APIs open. As suggested by another user we are also creating a centralized github organization to share scripts.

Thanks again for your support and please let us know if you have any other questions or suggestions. We look at them all seriously,

Regards,

-Tom-

mc-Innovations / Re: mcMarket - A place to share
« on: July 29, 2016, 11:41:58 am »
Thanks so much for the concept and suggestions.

We have actually been thinking about a code sharing system integrated in mc-Studio for a long time. It is also in the long term planning. We did not decide on a name for it yet but mc-Market is definitely one of the serious contenders. The "mc-Market" system would be something that can be used to push libraries and example code created by users. This would then be made public and available within mc-Studio to other users. We would also be testing and certifying libraries for those users that want a certain level of reliability and certainty that the libraries they use are good.

In the mean time we are setting up an mc-Things git organization so there is a central place to get started with submissions.

If anyone has further suggestions and things they would like to see in the "mc-Market" please post them here or send them to our info@mcthings.com email address.
Any input is always greatly appreciated!
