Cannot see the gateway in mcStudio
« on: May 14, 2017, 10:57:14 am »
Hi,

I have restarted  work on a gateway + 110 modules that I've got from the Kickstarter campaign last year. I remember it worked - I saw the gateway details in IDE last year when I played with the kit.
After several months, I wanted today to make it work, but so far without success. I have updated the modules with mc-OTA and the FW on the gateway using the correct .bin file.
I have also followed the USB update procedure. I have attached a screenshot of mc-OTA after updating the gateway.

I cannot see the gateway in the Devices section of mcStudio. I have changed the switch/router, disabled firewall etc.
I am running out of ideas after one full day trying to make it work. I don't have a WPS Wi-Fi router, all I tried is LAN connection.

Is there any utility to find/confirm presence of the gateway in the network? A UDP packet based utility? Any other way?
The connection LED lights up and the switch port LED is also on. Any help is really appreciated.

I dug out an older WPS WiFi router and the gateway connects to the WiFi network as expected. Connection LED is lit.
Still in mcStudio I cannot see it...

Hi cclr,
have you downloaded the latest version of mcStudio from the website? You need to ensure that everything is up to date (which you did with the mcOS firmware for the devices) however as we add new features and fix bugs, new version of mcStudio are also required to get things up and running.

Try this and let us know if it helps
Thanks

I have all FW and SW up to date. I have tried 3 different PCs without luck. In the past couple of days I cannot see at all the mc110 modules in mcOTA updater anymore. I used new batteries, different modules. The mcOTA application seems to see the dongle (indicated by 'Ready' text) but the modules are not found. The gateway is not seeing anything also. I have read relevant topics in the forum but so far I cannot make this work.

It is frustrating since I have been planning to use these modules in a large project, with at least 30 modules per gateway, monitoring temperature in an industrial environment.
Is there any low level serial debugging that I could do?

Hi cclr,

let's start at the top and make sure you have everything up to date as using these modules for a temperature sensing network is actually quite easy and can provide a ton of value.

Software:
mcStudio - you need to be at the latest version: Current Release v0.8.399.0. This can be downloaded from the website: https://www.mcthings.com/products/mcstudio/

mcOTA - you need to be at the latest version: Current Release v1.2.13. This can be downloaded from the website: https://www.mcthings.com/products/mcota/

mcOS for devices/hardware:

Gateway: Your gateway needs to have the application processor updated as well as the host processor. You should be at:
Application Processor Download v0.6-367
Host Processor Download v0.8-421
From website: https://www.mcthings.com/products/mcgateway110/

Modules: When you download the newest version of mcOTA, you need to put your modules to the latest firmware:
mcModule110 mcOS v0.8-376 (https://www.mcthings.com/products/mcmodule110/)
mcModule120 mcOS v0.8-415 (https://www.mcthings.com/products/mcmodule120/)

Be sure you have fresh batteries in the modules when you go to update and be sure you follow the process for updating as listed in the mcOTA documentation as well as the mcGateway documentation.

Please confirm that all of this is up to date

You mentioned that you had used 3 computers, what is the OS versions for these computers?

Hi,

I went again through all the steps listed without success. I have all the latest SW and I have unistalled, restarted and reinstalled the applications. I'm using Windows 10 on all computers.
Now I cannot see the mcModules using the dongle and mcOTA. I was able to do that several weeks ago and I suspect the dongle is broken somehow. I have port 3 selected, I've checked the baud rate and mcOTA shows it's "Ready". But then it fails to find various 110 modules based on serial number. I had new batteries installed, too.

I am not sure if the drivers for the dongle matter. I am attaching what I have in the system and what is selected.

I really want to make this work since I think the long battery life on mcModules is what I need for my multiple point temperature collection project. I thinking to purchase a new mcDongle and a batch of newer mcModules (I have 5 x 110 from the Kickstarter campaign). Should I buy a new gateway, too?

Hi Cclr,

Sorry to hear you are having troubles updating the modules.

The mcOTA and the mcDongle work hand in hand to load up new firmware to the mcModules. Once you see "Ready" on the mcOTA it means that, mcOTA was able to talk to the mcDongle and is ready for more instructions. So, your drivers should be all good.

Details on update steps:
1. Start mcOTA and make sure it says "Ready". (again  :) ).
2. Click "Search Device". (This start continuous scans for bootloader beacons )
3. Power Cycle your mcModule by taking out the battery and putting it back in. (mcModules always boot in bootloader mode for 5seconds, once the 5sec elapsed it will go to its normal operation and will never go back to bootloader mode until another reboot).
4. Within the 5 seconds bootloader mode you should be able to see population of the Device Information window in the mcOTA.
5. Click "Start Update" to begin updating the mcModules. Wait until it says "Firmware Update Done".

I hope this helps.

Best regards,
mcGyver

I can confirm that I am seeing this identical behavior.  I just recently started working on a project using the mcPlugs that I received recently from Kickstarter.  I attempted to update my mcGateway and now I can no longer see it in mcStudio.  Before today when I attempted to update the mcGateway I WAS able to see it in mcStudio and connect to it.  Currently I can't see it in mcStudio and I am unable to connect to it with the mcDongle to update the host processor.

mcOTA Version: 1.2.13
mcStudio Version: 0.9.534.0

All firmware updates were downloaded from website within the past 3 days.
mcGateway Application Processor: 0.9.615
mcGateway Host Processor: 0.9.615

Installation Steps (to make it clear that I'm doing it properly):
1. Get a USB stick, and formatted it as FAT32
2. Copy mcGw110.bin to the USB stick
3. Insert USB stick into mcGateway
4. Hold User Switch and press Reset
Status led blinks quickly, then 3 times slowly.  Then status led stays solid and USB key light blinks a few times (assuming it's transferring data).
Eventually the light starts blinking normally and the CONN led comes on indicating a USB connection.
5. Remove USB key
6. Start mcOTA Updater
7. Click search device
8. Press reset button (Note: mcGateway and mcDongle are less than an inch apart)
Status light blinks quickly then goes to normal operation. CONN led lights up shortly afterwards.  mcOTA says "Connection to device failed"
Yes, I have tried pressing reset before search, yes I have tried entering the serial number in the configuration, yes I have tried unplugging the device instead of using reset switch, yes I have tried rebooting my computer and trying again.

Now, let's test the mcDongle to make sure it's working:
1. Press Search Deavice
2. Plug in a mcPlug
    mcOTA finds the device shortly
        Serial Number: 000...
        VM Firmware Version: 8v0.9r615
        Bootloader Version: 8V1.2r0
        Free Upload Space: 188416
        Device Type: 8

The same is true for connecting a mcModule to the mcOTA.  Only the mcGateway fails to connect.

Any thoughts you might have (or beta versions of software we can try) would be GREATLY appreciated.  I'm stuck right now with no options.  The mcGateway worked yesterday, and since upgrading the application processor it has stopped!

I am also having a similar situation:

I set up the gateway today with 5 120 modules using mcOTA and the flash drive. I was able to connect the Gateway to my home network with WPS and it showed up in MC studio. After I restarted the gateway it no longer connects to the network nor shows up in studio nor device manager.

Hello all,
sorry that you are seeing some weird behavior. I can say that I just tested an mcGateway110 and was able to update it completely (both the application processor and the GWHost). I can also see the mcGateway within mcStudio and can connect to it without issue.
Checking with our team, here are some suggestions to see if we can get things back up and running for you:

@Veleek -  it seems like the USB upgrade did work (based on the lights you see)
Have you ever upgraded the gateway previous to this?
Can you try the OTA process again but this time don't enter the ID of the device, leave it blank and see if the OTA picks up the gateway

@Bernstern
Can you confirm that you were able to update the gateway using mcOTA to the newest version?
Can you try connecting the gateway to WPS again and see if it connects to your network? If so, you might want to consider entering the SSID and password within the gateway config so that the gateway has that information going forward

I got it working my reinstalling mc-studio, mc-ota and reinstalling the firmware for the gateway. I'm not sure what fixed it but something did :D

@mc-T2

Yes, I have successfully upgraded the gateway previously without problem.
I have tried uninstalling everything (mcStudio, mcOTA, drivers, etc.) and reinstalling (including reflashing the device with a USB key) and the gateway still doesn't connect to the mcDongle (regardless of whether I specify the ID or not).

I can confirm that the gateway is definitely connected to the network as I can see it show up and disappear in the list of devices on the router, so it's successfully getting an IPAddress.

According to the source (in mcScript.dll and the whitepaper provided), the gateway should broadcast on UDP port 25452.  I assume this occurs after the device is connected to the network.  Using a network sniffer, I don't see any traffic coming from the device other than DHCP requests (which are broadcast) when the device boots.

Hi Veleek,

Can you use the mcDongle to update your other devices? Just want to confirm that the dongle is still working properly.

Has anything changed on your network since you were able to work with the platform? Any security changes, new router, etc?

The PC and the gateway need to be on the same subnet to communicate - can you confirm this?
