Gateway Host FW question
« on: June 11, 2016, 10:23:49 pm »
The attached image is my Gateway being flashed again with the latest FW.

My question is how can you tell if the flashing works via the USB drive?

What does hardware 6 mean? Is that indicating that I have in fact flashed my Gateway correctly via USB?

I'm only showing the images as an example - to be able to read the data from the device

You could see the version of firmware running on your mcGateway from mcStudio. In the list if devices.

I see that your gateway does not run the latest firmware, that probably explains the issue you have.

When you update with USB stick you have to make sure that mcGateway could access the USB stick. Older USB 2 devices seems to work best.

Ok, I figured as much - Tried a few different USB thumb drives -

I hold USER SW and RESET, Let RESET go still holding USER SW until the 3 quick flashes then let USER SW go.

So I'm now questioning the actual file - I have downloaded it 20 times - same Kb 205. Wish there was a way of knowing the version#

I can't get the Gateway to update to the new version 06.355

After the last of the three green LED blinks, dies the green LED stays on for a while before it starts to blink again, whit a while I mean maybe 5 seconds?

Nothing I'm doing seems to make the firmware update.

green led flashes fast three times, then starts its normal flashing.  USB drive LED is on then goes off.  Are we sure this file is correct - the one on the down load?

Can you post or email me the file that you know is correct? tony@flook.ca

PS. Is it possibly not upgrading because I have upgraded the module on the gateway first? Should I put that back to the previous version?

The problem here is most likely not the file its your USB memory stick.
I have seen this several times, the problem is that the USB devices you have tested with indicates to the mcGateway that I could use to much mA so mcGateway dies not continue the negotiation.

Please try some more USB memory stick.
I have tried with two old USB 2 sticks 2GB and 4GB with success.

I have 3 USB sticks - All years old (7+ years) with 2GB - 1GB and they don't appear to be having issues.

I'm uploading a video so you can see what I'm doing..... I'm at a loss.

The issue here is that the mcGateway has a limit in current (mA) I think it was 100 and if the device reports that it could draw 120 even if it just uses 80 then the mcGateway will not continue the update.
So that's why it could work in other devices but not in mcGateway.

But I have already updated the firmware on the Gateway without issues.

Using the USB drives that I'm using right now -

Are you really sure that you have?
The version you have in your mcGatway is old, probably the version that was installed when you got it from mcThings.

@flookdigital: Do you have any USB2 sticks at all to try? We have found that sometimes the gateway isn't happy to accept an input from a USB stick that may draw more than 100mA. We are addressing this issue with our engineers. If you could try again with an 'older' USB stick and let us know.

According to your screenshot, the GW version is incorrect. You are running V06.352 and it should be V06.355.

Yes, got that.

How old is old?

I have tried the following sticks - All formatted Fat32, All clean.

1GB Kingston (8 years old)
4GB UNKNOWN Brand (9 years old)
4GB SD Card holder USB IOGear (6 years old)

The most important is not the age it should be a simple and cheap one :)
Maybe you have one that you got free with commercial on it?
With that type of USB device it's a greater chance that it will work.
