Router without WPS
« on: June 20, 2016, 03:19:08 pm »
I have a router that does not have WPS available.

Other than spending a bundle on a new router , is there any other way to connect and set up the WEP manually?

Thank you

Hello.
Today there is not possible to setup the Wi-Fi without WPS.
But of course you could connect a Ethernet cable from your router and connect your mcGateway.

Little of topic but I strongly recommend you to change your wireless encryption from WEP to WPA 2 AES.

If your router does not support that then you really need to buy a new one.
WEP does not provide any security at all because it's very easy to "hack" and grab the security key.

We will add the ability to configure the Wi-Fi SSID and Password via mcStudio. This will require you to connect to the gateway via Ethernet at first. But afterwards the gateway will use the provided SSID and Password.

So --- really, after all that, its best to try to get a better router...
my ISP 'claimed' that, the WPS function was turned off in the firmware for security
---ya well. it has given me issues with printers before too ,,

ok..thank you ! i will look into an upgraded router

Yes, i think its time for you to update your router.
Or at least change the wifi security from WEP.

This only has WEP .. so that combination of that and the WPS issue..
its time to change it ... i totally understand :-)

And that way i can get these up and running so i can experiment..

The firmware upload seemed to go smoothly..so i am eager to get going

Thanks again

I understand, then its must be very old  :)

Lets just connect the mcGateway with cable until you get a new router so that you could start right away  ;)

So I found a workaround for this.

Since my main router does not support WPS. I was able to work around the problem using a simpler home router that did have WPS.

What I did was:
- Turn off the 2.4GHz Wifi on my main router.
- I then fired up a router that did have WPS and configured it to have the same settings, SSID and Password as my main router, just to be sure I also made sure it was on the same channel and had the same encryption.
- Initiated the WPS process and connected the mcGateway to the temporary router.
- Turned off and on the mcGateway to make sure it re-connected, and then turned it off.
- Turned off the temporary router and activated the Wifi on my main router again.
- Turned on the mcGateway, and now it connected to my main Router.
