After further experimentation ,  looks like the 120 modules that I have not tried to attach external sensors to do not exhibit the connection problems. They appear to be connecting fine.

The connection problem seems to only affect the modules I have tried to modify with external sensors. Any idea what I should look for that maybe causing the connection problem on these modules? Maybe solder slag between two pins or something?
